MISSING HOME: THE NIGHTMARES.
Sunlight entered faintly into my bedroom, making everything look obscure. I jolted up from bed soaked in beads of perspiration flowing down my forehead, my heart had been pounding on the double. I stared at the run-down wall in front of me and slowly caught my breath. It was just another one of those nightmares that I had been having constantly. Not being able to fall back to sleep, I quickly gathered my clothes and headed down to the bath to cleanse myself from the sticky texture on my skin. It was back for me once again. I filled the wooden tub with water and carefully positioned myself in it. As my toes touched the water surface, my feet began to freeze. The water was still rather cold, despite the end of winter. Taking my time dipping myself into the cool water, not wanting to catch a flu. Not long, I was accustomed to the cool water. I splashed lightly against my burning warm skin, scrubbing hard with the bar of soap which was at the side of the tub. Once I was done, I quickly dried myself with a rough and scratchy towel and dressed myself into costume. Staring right at the stained mirror combing my long, tangled hair, pondering of how much I have been enjoyed myself ever since coming here. It's been two months since my arrival. This was my home now. Spring was nearing, it was now the beginning of March. I had turned fifteen, and had received a belt of daggers from Master. I was overjoyed from the gift that I had received, as it must have cost alot. It was almost time to head out. As the raging drums pound hardly down on every beat, I sprinted towards the courtyard taking the new belt of daggers with me. It was going to be my first performance on the streets. I felt tense and excited at the same time. The gates to our estate started to open, kicking the event off with the thunderous clashing of cymbals. All ten of us children and youths cartwheeled out of the gates, pulling off all sorts of acrobatics that we have learnt over the months. I flipped and twirled in the air as our spectators awed in fascination at our vibrant stunts. Turning into a sword dancer as soon as I've landed daintily to the ground, swirling like a tornado as I withdrew my daggers confidently yet playfully tossing and juggling them around as if they were like the planets orbiting rapidly around the sun. As we proceeded along the streets, we acted out old tales of battles between China's most honoured heroes and evil sprits. Impersonating the characters with our postures and costumes, without speech, along with the battling of blades, grinding metal against metal. Master stayed near the crowd as our audience dropped numerous coins into the basket. I quickly pretended to slash through my opponent and as soon as he dropped dead, our street performance had ended. As our audience applauded enthusiastically, we gently bowed and rose, grinning widely back from ear to ear. From the corner of my eye, I spotted a cloaked figure hiding behind an alley. His presence made me felt disturbed. My intuition told me that I ought to beware of him, although I could not help to wonder curiously about him over dinner back home. We had a big feast tonight. Once dinner was over, I decided to take a relaxing shower after a hard day of work and placed the mysterious stranger who I had seen today out of mind. Three-fourth of the money earned today had been given to the household and Master while the remaining amount had been split among the ten of us. Each of us received thirty yuan and we could use it for anything that we wanted. After my bath, I happily strolled back to my room and placed my belt of daggers in the cupboard. Quickly tucking myself into bed, I thought of how well our performance had been today, feeling a sense of pride in what we had achieved together and thinking what I should do with the money I had received. I lay tiredly in bed, looking out of the window. Staring at the silver moon which cast down its light onto the silent town, with everyone fast asleep under the same dark sky. I drifted into deep sleep once more. My breath grew heavy as I dashed into the winding alleys of the town. It was coming for me once more. Chasing furiously behind me, wanting me hunted down. I darted pass sharp turns, trying to lose whatever was following me from behind. Looking over my shoulder trying to figure who or what it was. With no luck, I could not spot any part of it from behind. I was beginning to feel a sense of relief. However, part of me still questioned with apprehension. Has it lost sight of me? Had I finally escape from whatever that was coming after me for nights? Without looking to where I was heading, I accidentally turned into a dead end, banging myself against the wall. When I realised what a grave mistake I had made, it was too late. Whatever I feared was already blocking my escape from the situation I was in. I stared at the figure, making it out to be a human being that was coming for me. As it moved closer towards me, I shivered in fear, as perspiration and tears trickled down my face. Too frightened to move, as a hand reaches out to grab hold of me. Just then, my terrified scream pierced through the deafening silence of the town. I was trapped. |
